Students and parents across India are checking whether schools will remain closed on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. School holidays are not uniform across the country and can depend on state government notifications, regional festivals, board calendars and individual school schedules.

For September 22, Karam Puja is the main regional occasion linked to school closures in parts of eastern India. West Bengal has declared Tuesday a full-day state holiday for Karam Puja, with the notification covering state government offices and educational institutions under government control. West Bengal schools closed on September 22

Schools and other educational institutions covered by the West Bengal government's notification will remain closed on Tuesday, September 22, for Karam Puja. The Finance Department issued the notification on September 16, declaring the date a state government holiday. It covers state government establishments as well as government-controlled statutory bodies, boards, corporations, municipalities, panchayats, government-sponsored organisations and educational institutions.


The holiday is particularly relevant in areas where Karam Puja is widely observed, including parts of Bankura, Purulia, Jhargram and Paschim Medinipur. The festival is also observed in parts of North Bengal and among Adivasi communities in the state.

Assam holiday on September 22

Assam's official 2026 holiday calendar lists Tuesday, September 22, as a holiday for Karam Puja. The date follows September 21, which is listed as the Janmotsav of Srimanta Sankardeva.

Students and parents in Assam should nevertheless check their school's academic calendar and latest communication, particularly where an institution follows a separate schedule. The state also publishes an academic calendar for the 2026-27 session through Samagra Shiksha Axom.

What about Delhi-NCR schools?

Students in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad should not assume that September 22 will be a school holiday simply because West Bengal and Assam have a holiday for Karam Puja.

There is no nationwide school closure for September 22 based on the state holiday information cited above. School calendars can differ between CBSE, ICSE, state-board and individual private schools, so parents should check their institution's latest circular, website, app notification or message before deciding whether their child has classes.

Will private schools also remain closed?

Not necessarily. The West Bengal notification covers educational institutions under the state government's control, while private, autonomous and centrally administered institutions may follow their own academic calendars. Individual schools can also issue separate holiday notices.

Therefore, students and parents should treat an official circular or communication from their own school as the final confirmation. A holiday announced by one state does not automatically mean schools across India will remain closed.
