Schools and colleges in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar are expected to remain open on Thursday, July 23, despite heavy rain warnings across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), as no city-wide holiday has been announced by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) or other civic authorities.

The Maharashtra government has authorised district collectors and deputy commissioners to take immediate decisions on school closures if weather conditions worsen in specific areas. Officials said any decision on suspending classes will be based on real-time local conditions rather than a statewide order.

School closure decisions to depend on local conditions

Authorities said schools may be closed if flooding, severe waterlogging, landslides, blocked roads or other safety concerns affect students and staff. Any decision on holidays or suspension of classes will be taken by local authorities after assessing ground conditions in individual districts.

Parents advised to monitor official updates

With weather conditions expected to change rapidly, parents and students have been advised to regularly check updates issued by their schools, district collector offices and local education departments. Authorities said residents should not rely solely on general weather forecasts and should verify any announcements on school closures, revised timings or weather advisories before travelling.

IMD issues orange alert for Thane and Palghar

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Thane and Palghar, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by occasional strong winds over the next few hours.

The IMD has predicted wind speeds of 50-60 kmph in both districts on Thursday, with intense rainfall expected across parts of the Konkan region.

Mumbai remains under a yellow alert, with the weather department forecasting intermittent heavy rainfall and strong winds of similar speeds in isolated areas. Residents have been advised to remain cautious as weather conditions may change quickly.

Heavy rain forecast across Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra

According to the IMD, Konkan and Goa, along with Madhya Maharashtra, are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. Isolated places in the hilly and ghat regions of Madhya Maharashtra may experience extremely heavy rain.

The ongoing rainfall is being driven by active monsoon conditions, with moisture-laden winds strengthening precipitation along the Maharashtra coast. Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and nearby suburbs have already recorded heavy showers, gusty winds and waterlogging in several areas.

Weather experts have warned that persistent rainfall could lead to urban flooding, flash floods in vulnerable areas, landslides in hilly regions and reduced visibility on roads. Commuters have been advised to exercise caution while travelling, particularly in areas prone to waterlogging and traffic disruptions.

Heavy showers and strong winds likely to continue across MMR

Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region are expected to witness more spells of heavy rainfall as the active monsoon continues.

Earlier forecasts indicated that Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Palghar could receive heavy rain with winds of 40-60 kmph. Coastal districts including Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Raigad and Ratnagiri are likely to experience very heavy rainfall, lightning activity and strong winds of up to 50-70 kmph.

The administration has advised residents to avoid unnecessary visits to beaches and coastal areas during adverse weather conditions. People travelling outdoors have also been urged to carry umbrellas and rain protection due to the possibility of sudden heavy showers.
