Sawan Shivratri 2023: Dates, Chaturdashi tithi timings, significance and other details you should know

This year there are two Shivratri in Sawan as the month of Sawan stretches to almost two months. The first Sawan Shivratri is on July 15th, 2023, and the second Sawan Shivratri is on August 14th, 2023.

Sawan, also known as 'Shravan', is the fifth month of the Hindu lunar calendar and is considered one of the holiest months of the year. This auspicious month, which begins with the first rains of the monsoon season, is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva.

Every Monday during this period is regarded as a highly auspicious time to fast. This year, the Shravan period stretches for almost two months instead of the usual one-month long period. This is the first time in about 19 years, an almost two-month-long Shravan period is being observed.

This year Sawan will last for 59 days, from July 4 to August 31. July 10 marks the first fasting Monday of the period this year while August 28 marks the last Monday fast of the period.


To obtain the blessings of Lord Shiva and Parvati, people keep 'Sawan Somwar' fasts.

According to Drik Panchang, the Chaturdashi tithi will begin at 08:32 PM on July 15, 2023 on July 15 and will end at 10:08 PM on Jul 16, 2023. Similarly, the Chaturdashi tithi begins at 10:25 AM on Aug 14 and ends at 12:42 PM, Aug 15.

In addition, Kanwar Yatra is a significant ritual during this period. Devotees walk on foot to visit temples dedicated to Lord Shiva to fetch the holy water and then worship the God with that water.

According to the Hindu Calendar, an extra month is added every three years when the Sun changes its zodiac sign, or transits from one zodiac to another. This transit is also known as Sankranti. As a result, there are 12 Sankranti in a solar year, and the month with no Sankranti is termed as Malmas or Adhik mas which is the extra lunar month. In the Hindu calendar, it has 29.5 days in a month. A month is added to the lunar calendar, which is called the ‘Adhik’ mass or a means extra. It is also known as the Malmas or the Purusthotam mas.

The Adhik mas will start from 18th of July and last till the 16th of August. In this month the sun doesn't change the zodiac sign.
