Sawan is particularly considered the holiest month of the year for Lord Shiva devotees. Usually, Sawan falls in the months of July and August, corresponding to the monsoon season in India as the arrival of rain is believed to be a symbol of Lord Shiva's blessings and the renewal of life.
As per Hindu calender, Sawan starts on the first day of Shravana Krishna paksha. This year, the month of Sawan will last for a total of 58 days, from July 4 to August 31. This unusual lengthy month of Sawan is quite rare and happens once in 19 years! Hence, this year's Sawan is so special.
It is so because of astrological calculations. As per Hindu calender, the Adhik Maas or Mal Maas has extended the length of the Sawan month this year.
Significance
As said earlier, it is specially very important month for the devotees of Lord Shiva. Some observe fasting on Mondays, known as "Sawan Somvar," as it is believed to be particularly auspicious.
But the most recognizable features of the month is the Kanwar Yatra. The ritual involves devotees of Lord Shiva carrying water from holy rivers, such as the Ganges, in small pots called "kanwars." Adorned in saffron-colored clothes, they embark on foot pilgrimages to sacred places associated with Lord Shiva, symbolizing their devotion and dedication. These pilgrimages often involve walking long distances, singing bhajans (devotional songs), and performing prayers at various Shiva temples along the way.
Important dates
Mondays are most impotant in this holy month. In total, there will be eight such Sawan Somvars this year which will fall on July 10, July 17, July 24, July 31, August 7, August 14, August 21, and August 28.
