While the film highlights her role alongside Ranveer Singh and Arjun Rampal in the Aditya Dhar-directed franchise, it is a small yet striking feature, a prominent mole on her chin, that has caught widespread attention online.

What Is a Mole? Insights from Mayo Clinic

Often referred to as ‘beauty marks’ when visible on the face, moles are medically known as nevi. According to experts at the Mayo Clinic, these are common skin growths formed when pigment-producing cells, called melanocytes, cluster together instead of spreading evenly across the skin.

Most individuals have between 10 and 45 moles, many of which develop during childhood or adolescence.

Common Characteristics of Moles

Moles can vary significantly in appearance. As outlined by the Mayo Clinic:
  • Colour and texture: They may appear brown, black, tan, pink, red or even blue. Some are flat and smooth, while others may be raised or wrinkled.
  • Shape: Typically round or oval and symmetrical.
  • Size: Most are smaller than 6 mm in diameter, about the size of a pencil eraser.
Some moles may also grow hair, which is generally harmless.

Moles vs Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra: Key Differences

Skin markings are often confused with one another. The Mayo Clinic notes that small, dark bumps around the eyes, cheeks or nose may be dermatosis papulosa nigra, a form of seborrhoeic keratosis rather than true moles.

These are usually benign and more commonly seen in individuals with darker skin tones. While they pose no cancer risk, they are sometimes treated for cosmetic reasons.

When to Be Concerned: Understanding the ABCDE Rule

Although most moles are harmless, some may develop into melanoma, a serious type of skin cancer. The Mayo Clinic recommends monitoring moles using the ABCDE guide:
  • Asymmetry: One half does not match the other
  • Border: Edges appear irregular, ragged or blurred
  • Colour: Multiple or uneven shades
  • Diameter: Larger than 6 mm
  • Evolving: Changes in size, shape, colour or symptoms such as itching or bleeding
Any noticeable change should prompt a consultation with a healthcare professional.

As the viral discussion shows, what is often dismissed as a ‘flaw’ can, in reality, be a defining feature.
