On his son Arbaaz Khan's new talk show “The Invincibles”, Salim Khan detailed his difficult romance with his first wife, Salma Khan. The renowned screenwriter discussed how he overcame opposition from his wife's family. Salim Khan revealed that their connection began in the shadows. “I would like to meet your family”, he insisted afterwards. He was not at ease meeting in secret and lying to her family."

Salim Khan said, “Many were in my favour as well”. My father-in-law replied “We have inquired about you. You are well-educated and come from a nice household. Good boys are hard to come by these days. Magar religion nahin hai (The religion is not suitable)”. To this, the writer replied, “There may be dozens of conflicts between me and Salma, but religion will never be one of them”.

During the interview, Arbaaz Khan disclosed that his mother's name was originally Sushila, but she changed it to Salma after marriage. The actor also inquired about his father's decision to alter his name in the family. To which the ‘Sholay’ co-writer said that his wife’s grandmother, who was called Ajji, was the only one in the family who was supportive of him. She used to ask, “When will my Shankar arrive?"
