Sakat Chauth 2026 on January 6
Sakat Chauth is observed mainly by mothers. This Hindu fast is rooted in a simple wish, to protect children from harm and guide them towards a healthy, obstacle-free life.

In 2026, Sakat Chauth will be observed on Tuesday, January 6. The vrat is dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, and is especially linked to children’s well-being, long life, and emotional strength.

Also known as Tilkut Chauth, Sankata Chauth, Maghi Chauth, or Til Chaturthi, the day carries meaning rather than spectacle.

When is Sakat Chauth in 2026?

According to the Hindu Panchang, Magh Krishna Paksha Chaturthi begins on January 6 at 8:01 am and ends on January 7 at 6:52 am. Since the Chaturthi tithi remains during the day, the vrat is observed on January 6.

The fast is completed only after moonrise, which is expected around 8:54 pm. Women break their fast after offering arghya to the moon at night.

Why Fasting Is Central to Sakat Chauth

Fasting is the heart of Sakat Chauth. Traditionally, many women observe a nirjala vrat, meaning they avoid both food and water for the entire day. However, practices vary depending on health and family customs.

This fast is not about punishment or suffering. It represents self-control, patience, and emotional strength. The belief is that when a mother willingly practices restraint and prayer, that spiritual energy shields her children from illness, fear, accidents, and future struggles.

Throughout the day, her thoughts remain focused on her children’s safety and happiness, turning fasting into an act of quiet protection.

The Role of Lord Ganesha in Sakat Chauth

Sakat Chauth is dedicated to Lord Ganesha as Vighnaharta, the one who removes obstacles.

According to belief, on Magh Krishna Chaturthi, Ganesha symbolically circled his parents, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, instead of travelling the physical world. This act represented wisdom over physical strength.

Because of this story, the day is considered especially powerful for prayers related to children, growth, learning, and protection from unseen problems.

Sakat Chauth Puja Rituals and Offerings

The puja is usually performed in the evening. A clean area is prepared, and an idol or image of Lord Ganesha is placed on a chowki. Common offerings include:

  • Tilkut or til-gud laddoos
  • Modak or motichoor laddoos
  • Fruits and seasonal roots like sweet potato
  • Durva grass, red flowers, and a diya
Sesame seeds (til) are especially important. They symbolise warmth, nourishment, and resilience, qualities needed to survive winter and life’s challenges.

Why Moon Worship Is Important on Sakat Chauth

Moon worship sets Sakat Chauth apart from other Chaturthi fasts. After moonrise, women offer arghya using water mixed with milk, sesame seeds, grains, and flowers.

The moon represents emotional balance, care, and continuity. Offering arghya is believed to calm a mother’s worries and bring mental peace for both mother and child. Only after this ritual is the fast broken.

The Deeper Meaning of Sakat Chauth

Beyond rituals and timings, Sakat Chauth carries a quiet emotional truth. It reminds us that protection does not always come from control, sometimes it comes from faith, patience, and letting go.

In today’s uncertain world of parenting fears and constant anxiety, Sakat Chauth offers a pause. A night where mothers place their trust in prayer, set fear aside, and wish only for their children’s safety, without asking for anything in return.

That simplicity is what makes Sakat Chauth powerful.
