The trend of South Indian movies doing phenomenally well in the Hindi belt continues. The latest addition to the list is Rishab Shetty’s Kantara. The Kannada action thriller has impressed the audience with its rawness, and the numbers are there to prove it.

Per media reports, Kantara is all set to surpass Rs. 13.50 crores in earnings for the first week. This would make the Rishab Shetty starrer among the top-grossing bilingual films of the year, behind blockbusters like KGF 2, RRR, Karthekiya 2, and Rocketry.

Written and directed by Shetty, the film also stars him in the lead. The movie narrates the tale of a local demigod (Bhoota) who trades forest lands with a king in 1870 in exchange for happiness. Many years later when the king’s son, driven by greed, attempted to seize back the land, he died due to the wrath of Bhoota.


Kantara was well received by critics as well. Writing for The Hindu, Muralidhara Khajane wrote that Rishab Shetty, who’s also the director of the movie, succeeded in portraying the traditional practices meticulously in his native dialect. Khajane also praised Kantara for its vivid locations, B. Ajaneesh Loknath’s music, and brilliant cinematography.

Another film critic, Sridevi S heaped praise on Kantara. Writing for The Times of India, she hailed the "visual grandeur" of the movie and noted that the pre-climax and climax of the movie were "performed to perfection."

Several celebrities from the film industry praised Kantara as well, especially the performances of Shetty and Kishore. Other celebrities, including Prabhas, Dhanush, Shilpa Shetty, Anil Kapoor, and Kangana Ranaut, also appreciated the movie on social media.

Kantara has grossed over Rs.170 crores since its release, including Rs.20 crores in overseas collections.
