Rinku Singh's father KhanChand Singh, who passed away today morning after battling stage-4 Liver Cancer, played a significant role in shaping his career despite his modest and humble background. He worked extra time to earn money to support Rinku build his career.

Rinku Singh's father used to work as an LPG Cylinder delivery man in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh. Despite facing numerous challenges, he played a key role in shaping his son's career as a cricketer and helping him achieve international fame. Despite the financial challenges, he ensured that Rinku got everything possible to make it big as a cricketer.

“Father would hit us whenever he found us playing cricket,” Rinku had recalled in an interview. “Mother was somewhat supportive.” In fact, Rinku’s mother even borrowed Rs 1000 from a neighbouring shop so that he could go to Kanpur for a tournament.


Rinku Singh played in a schools’ tournament, where he was the man-of-the-match in the final and was gifted a motorbike. “My father had come to watch the final. He must have realised I was doing something good as he never hit me again for playing cricket.”

On Friday morning, Harbhajan Singh shared the news of demise of Rinku Singh's father. KhanChand Singh was put on a ventilator support at a private hospital in Greater Noida after his health worsened, but could not be saved.

How Rinku Singh's father helped him build his career

Rinku’s father, KhanChand Singh worked as an LPG cylinder delivery man for a salary of Rs 12,000 a month, while his mother, Bina Devi is a housewife. For many years, Rinku and his family lived in a 2-room quarter in the stockyard provided by the cylinder company. His father KhanChand Singh made numerous sacrifices and played a vital role in shaping his son's career.

Rinku’s family faced significant financial hardships in the past, with his father working tirelessly as a cooking gas cylinder delivery man to make ends meet. Singh would earn a little extra by loading more cylinders on his bicycle. Despite his son’s fame and achievements, Khanchand remains grounded and continues to work every day.

“He at least had a goal and a certain madness for something,” says Singh. “Of course, I was not too happy to learn that cricket was pulling Rinku in, but when I saw that he was getting paid for playing, I knew it was serious," KhanChand Singh was quoted as saying by Outlook.

In an interview with News18, Rinku Singh’s close friend, Arjun Singh Fakira opened up about his struggles he had to overcome to become a cricketer. Arjun revealed that Rinku had little support from his family because of their low income and even got thrashed by his father for not concentrating on his studies. Arjun admitted that Rinku’s father was completely against his decision to play cricket as never in his wildest dreams had he thought that his son would become a cricketer.

When Rinku Singh gifted bike to father

Last year, Rinku Singh grabbed headlines for his heartwarming gesture of gifting his father, Khanchand Singh, a Kawasaki Ninja 400 sports bike worth over lakhs. A video went viral online which showed Rinku Singh's father riding the bike, earning praises from the internet.

“More important for us has been the self-respect he has brought home,” an emotional Singh told Outlook. “Earlier, my boss at the gas agency mistreated me, used profanities and brushed me off as any other labourer. He now speaks to me with respect and calls me sahab.”

The parents still stay in the old, ramshackle house, while the rest of the family has shifted to a luxurious three-storey home nearby. “Rinku asked me to leave this job and move with them to the new house,” says Singh. “But the problem is, if I leave this job, what will I do? I will be good for nothing. Fortunately, we have enough money and all the comforts now. But in the end, how can we forget where we come from?”
