Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Neeraj Kumar said Singh alerted him earlier this week over the phone about the suspected hacking of his social media account. Acting on the complaint, the cricketer’s brother, Sonu Singh, subsequently approached the city cyber crime cell on Wednesday with a written application seeking action.
Police officials said Singh, who hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh, had not been actively monitoring his Facebook account for several months owing to his demanding cricketing schedule, a factor that may have delayed the detection of the breach.
"It is not clear when exactly the account was hacked. The cyber crime cell has initiated a detailed investigation into the matter," SSP Kumar said.
Authorities said efforts are currently underway to trace the source of the hacking and determine whether the account was used for any unauthorised activity, including possible financial transactions or impersonation.
