Even a Florida-based gut specialist, Dr Joseph Salhab, agrees. In a post shared on June 28, the gastroenterologist said: "You don’t need a liver detox or cleanse." Instead, he suggests a much simpler and natural way to take care of your liver, by eating certain vegetables.
What Should You Eat?
Dr Salhab shared a list of 14 vegetables that naturally boost liver function and help lower the risk of fatty liver disease. He explained, “These vegetables naturally boost the liver’s detox enzymes, making the liver stronger and healthier.”Here are the 14 vegetables he recommends:
- Broccoli
- Broccoli sprouts (they have the highest sulforaphane content)
- Brussels sprouts
- Kale
- Cabbage (green, savoy, Napa, etc.)
- Bok choy
- Collard greens
- Mustard greens
- Turnip greens
- Swiss chard
- Arugula
- Watercress
- Rapini (broccoli rabe)
- Cauliflower
How Do These Help?
Dr Salhab explained that these veggies boost something called Phase II detox enzymes in your liver. These enzymes help your body break down and remove harmful substances. One key compound in these vegetables is sulforaphane, which plays a major role in this detox process. The National Cancer Institute explains that in Phase II detoxification, the liver adds safe molecules to harmful chemicals to make them easier to remove from your body.
