Republic Day 2023: Why is the National flag unfurled by President of India every year on this day ? Read here
On Republic day, the national flag is unfurled by the president of India who is the first citizen and constitutional head of the country. While the Prime Minister hoists the flag on Independence day.

Republic day is celebrated to commemorate the implementation of the constitution of India. The president of India unfurls the flag every year at Rajpath in New Delhi on January 26, thus commencing all the celebrations.
But why does the President unfurl the National flag on Republic day and the Prime Minister hoists it on Independence day?
At the time of enforcement of the Indian constitution, India was already independent from colonial rule. That is why the President, who is the first citizen and constitutional head of the country unfurls the flag.
Whereas, on independence day the national flag is tied on the lower poll and raised above by the Prime Minister to indicate India's freedom from the British’s rule and slavery and the emergency of a new nation. The Prime minister is entrusted to do this job because during independence, the president had not taken over the office and a colonizer could not be trusted to raise the flag of new India.
Location
The location of both the events is different. The president unfurls the flag on Rajpath in New Delhi, followed by other celebrations. During Independence day the Prime Minister hoists the national flag at Red Fort.
