Republic Day 2023: Who is eligible for a free trip on Delhi Metro?

India will celebrate its 74th Republic Day on January 26 this year. Celebrations will take place on Kartavya Path in Delhi as it does every year. Online ticket sales for the main ceremony have already begun.

This year, invitees to the celebrations and those having digital tickets for seats at the site would be able to get “free metro travel”. However, on January 26, just two metro stations near Raisina Hill will be free of charge: Udyog Bhawan and Central Secretariat. Udyog Bhawan station is on the Yellow Line, whereas Central Secretariat station serves as a transfer point between the Yellow and Violet lines.

Republic Day e-tickets purchased online will include a QR code that can be scanned at metro stations to receive a token for a free trip to stations near the event. This information was revealed by defence ministry officials at a presentation on the events scheduled for January 23-31 as part of the Republic Day celebrations on Wednesday.


Invitees and ticket holders with a valid invitation, admission, or ticket and a government-issued photo ID can use the metro for free to get to their assigned enclosures by getting off at the Udyog Bhawan and Central Secretariat stations.

This will be Rajpath's first Republic Day celebration after it was renamed “Kartavya Path” last year.

The Republic Day celebrations this year will be held on the newly renovated Central Vista Avenue, and the government has put 32,000 tickets on sale online for the general public, according to defence ministry officials. All formal invitations to the ceremonial event will be delivered online for the first time, they added.
