Delhi has banned the sale of liquor on Republic Day. The capital city will have multiple dry days until March. Here is the complete list of occasions when Delhi will witness a ban on liquor sales across the city.

India will commemorate the 74th Republic Day on January 26, 2023, with grand celebrations across the country; however, the Delhi government has announced a ban on the sale of liquor on the national festival.

Reports said that bars and restaurants located in the capital city of India are prohibited from selling liquor on this national day.

All liquor shops in Delhi will also remain closed.


A majority of states in India, observe compulsory liquor bans on Republic Day, Independence Day, and Gandhi Jayanti. On other occasions, different states follow different rules and regulations concerning the imposition of dry days. Shop owners who fail to abide by the designated norms are fined by the concerned authorities of the state.

This is for the first time Delhi would witness a complete ban on liquor sales in clubs, hotels, and restaurants. Earlier, the ban was imposed only on liquor shops. The excise department in Delhi has recently issued the list of dry days for this year. The dry days are assigned based on the basis of a new excise policy that replaced the Excise Policy 2021-2022 in September 2022. The new policy received a lot of backlash from the central government.
