Renault Duster hybrid launched in India at Rs 16.99 lakh, check mileage, performance, rivals and features.
The new model combines a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with two electric motors and a 1.4 kWh battery. Renault has positioned the hybrid as an alternative to the existing 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol versions. It also becomes the most expensive powertrain option in the Duster range, with prices going up to Rs 19.49 lakh.
Renault Duster hybrid price and variants
Renault offers the Duster Strong Hybrid in three variants. Here are their introductory ex-showroom prices.| Variant | Price |
|---|---|
| Evolution | Rs 16.99 lakh |
| Techno | Rs 18.99 lakh |
| Emotion | Rs 19.49 lakh |
The prices are ex-showroom and do not include additional costs such as registration, insurance and other charges.
Renault Duster hybrid mileage and powertrain
The Duster Strong Hybrid uses a 1.8-litre, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with two electric motors and a 1.4 kWh battery pack. Renault's system can operate using electric power, the petrol engine or a combination of both, depending on driving conditions. The SUV delivers a combined output of 160 bhp and 208 Nm, according to the launch details. It uses an intelligent multi-mode automatic transmission to manage power delivery between the engine and electric motors.
Renault claims an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 29 kmpl. The company also says the SUV can run in electric mode for up to 80% of city-driving time under suitable conditions. The petrol engine can switch off when it is not needed, including in some low-speed situations, helping reduce fuel consumption in traffic.
The battery recharges through regenerative braking and deceleration, so drivers do not need to plug the SUV into an external charging point. Actual mileage, however, will depend on traffic, road conditions, driving style and other factors.
Renault Duster hybrid vs Grand Vitara, Victoris and Hyryder
The Duster Strong Hybrid enters a segment that already includes strong-hybrid versions of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Maruti Suzuki Victoris and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. The figures are based on available sources on web, not based on real world usage recorded independently.| SUV | Claimed strong-hybrid mileage |
|---|---|
| Renault Duster | 29 kmpl |
| Maruti Suzuki Victoris | 28.65 kmpl |
| Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara | 27.97 kmpl |
| Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder | 27.97 kmpl |
The rival SUVs use a 1.5-litre petrol engine with Toyota's strong-hybrid technology, while the Duster gets a larger 1.8-litre petrol engine and a 1.4 kWh battery. Renault's setup also uses a multi-mode automatic transmission instead of the e-CVT found in the rival models. Certified figures offer a useful comparison, although real-world mileage can vary.
Duster Hybrid design and features
Duster Hybrid retains the overall exterior design and cabin architecture of the new-generation Duster. Its main change is under the bonnet, where Renault has added the E-Tech strong-hybrid powertrain.Features offered across the Duster range include a digital instrument cluster, touchscreen infotainment system and connected-car technology. Equipment depends on the variant, so buyers should check the specification of their chosen trim before making a purchase.
The new powertrain gives customers an alternative to the existing turbo-petrol engines, particularly if they prioritise fuel efficiency and spend considerable time driving in city traffic.
Duster hybrid vs petrol versions
The existing Duster turbo-petrol engines have lower ARAI-certified fuel-efficiency figures. The 1.0-litre turbo-petrol manual is rated at 19.41 kmpl, while the 1.3-litre turbo-petrol manual returns 17.75 kmpl and the dual-clutch automatic version is rated at 18.45 kmpl. The hybrid's claimed 29 kmpl figure represents a significant difference on paper. However, buyers will need to weigh that advantage against the higher purchase price, their annual driving distance and the conditions in which they normally drive.
With the Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160, Renault has added a self-charging hybrid option to the Duster range and entered a market where the Grand Vitara, Victoris and Hyryder already offer established strong-hybrid alternatives. Its claimed mileage, electric-driving capability and three-variant lineup will be central to how it competes in India's midsize SUV segment.
