An Indian designer has turned an everyday kitchen utensil into a multimillion-dollar business opportunity after securing a $350,000 deal on Shark Tank USA for his innovative foldable measuring spoon. Rahul Agarwal, founder of Polygons Design, developed a space-saving alternative to conventional measuring spoons, using an origami-inspired mechanism to transform a flat tool into different precise measurements.

Agarwal’s invention attracted the interest of investor Lori Greiner and guest Shark Mindy Kaling, who agreed to invest $350,000 in exchange for an 8% equity stake and an additional 2% in advisory shares. The deal values Polygons Design at $3.5 million, highlighting how a simple redesign of a familiar household object can attract significant investment.

How Rahul Agarwal reinvented the measuring spoon

Polygons is a foldable measuring spoon set designed to replace six traditional measuring spoons with two flexible, flat tools. By pinching the spoons at marked points, users can fold them into different sizes to measure ingredients accurately.

The larger spoon offers measurements of half a tablespoon, one tablespoon and two tablespoons. The smaller spoon measures a quarter teaspoon, half a teaspoon and one teaspoon.

Measuring just 2.8 millimetres thick when flattened, the spoons are made from food-grade thermoplastic and hydrophobic silicone, with embedded neodymium magnets. The design aims to reduce kitchen clutter while making measuring ingredients more convenient.

According to the company, the two tools can replace a conventional six-piece measuring spoon set while folding flat for compact storage.

How a challenge at design college inspired the invention

Agarwal first developed the idea in 2014 while studying at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad. When a senior told him that the spoon had already reached its final form and did not need redesigning, he took the remark as a challenge.

“I don’t even cook,” Agarwal said, explaining that he simply could not stop thinking about how the utensil could be improved.

He developed the core concept within three days: a flat sheet that could fold into a precise measuring spoon when pinched at designated points. However, turning the initial idea into a functional product took multiple design iterations and years of refinement.

The finished invention went on to earn more than 20 international design awards before Agarwal presented it to investors on Shark Tank USA.

Kaling described the product as “really ingenious” and “very useful”. She joined Lori Greiner in offering Agarwal a combined investment of $350,000 for an 8% equity stake, along with 2% in advisory shares.

The agreement puts the company’s valuation at $3.5 million, marking a significant milestone for the Indian designer whose idea began as a challenge to rethink an ordinary kitchen utensil.
