Ranbir Kapoor's decade old beef comment comes back to haunt Brahmastra

This Friday will see the release of the Ranbir Kapoor-Alia Bhatt magnum opus Brahmastra. Directed by Ayaan Mukherji - responsible for Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani and Wake Up Sid - the Rs 400 crore has been in production for years now and could see more snags as it gears up for release.

A decade old Ranbir Kapoor interview -during promotions for his film Rockstar - in which he says he is a "big beef fan" has caused chaos, with the Bajrang Dal taking offense to the actor's comments.

In an interview on a food show, Kapoor says, "My family is from Peshawar, so a lot of Peshawari food has come with them. I am a mutton, paya, and beef fan. Yeah, I am a big beef fan."


Following the resurfacing of the 11-year-old video, the movie's stars were blocked from entering the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain, with Bajrang Dal workers shouting slogans of 'Jai Shree Ram.'

“We will not allow them to worship at the holy Mahakaleshwar temple as a few days back Ranbir had said that he likes to eat mutton, chicken and beef in non-veg food," a Bajrang Dal leader told reporters at the temple.


This is the latest controversy to hit the release of the movie, with lead actor Alia Bhatt also drawing flak from sections of the internet for a past interview.

In an interaction with Bollywood big wig Karan Johar, Bhatt says, "if you don't like me, don't watch me." The comment drew the ire of netizens who called for the movie to be boycotted.

Ahead of the movie's September 9, Twitter has been flooded with the #BoycottBrahmastra hashtag, which is currently trending on the Indian side of the micro-blogging site.

The Ayaan Mukherji film also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Mouni Roy and Telugu actor Nagarjuna in. It is set to hit the theatres in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.
