Helmed by Karan Malhotra, 'Shamshera' is set in the fictitious city of Kaza.
Ranbir Kapoor's first film in four years, 'Shamshera' is finally out on the big screen and the first day collection shows a slow start. Despite the trailer being a promising hit, the film has failed to leave a significant mark on opening day. This has been causing minor panic as the expectation was much higher, owing to the reported film budget being Rs 150 crores. making it one of the most expensive Bollywood films ever made. But, the film is expected to pick up the pace as the weekend rolls in.

Movie trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh took to Twitter, to reveal the first day collection of the film and it averages around Rs 10.24 crores, fifth highest of any Bollywood movie this year. He also stated that the movie experienced a poor response on National chains, while single screens recorded much below the expected footfall. The film is eyeing its second and third day collection for a boost.

According to Box Office India sources, the film hasn't fared well in mass market, while it also noticeably underperformed in Mumbai. The film is the second-widest release following the pandemic and is currently playing in over 4000 theatres. The film will have a tough go of it as it has also received less than positive reviews.

The film has Ranbir Kapoor playing a double roll, while Vaani Kapoor plays the role of the romantic lead. Sanjay Dutt plays the villain in the movie. Ranbir in an interview with News18 said, "Shamshera is a period drama, so there was a particular body shape and presentation that Karan very clearly wanted from this part. Physically, this film has been, by far, the toughest film for me because I am a very thin guy; that’s my genetic build. So, losing weight is very easy for me but putting it on is harder. It was tough physically and mentally while playing two characters and trying to match Karan’s imagination and his vision of them. It has definitely been the toughest film of my career."

The Yash Raj Films product might be adding to their list of films that didn't do as well this year. Their last hit film was in 2019 with the film War.
