As the sun sets on February 28, Muslims worldwide will look towards the western horizon, awaiting the sight of the crescent moon. The Islamic lunar calendar, unlike the solar-based Gregorian calendar, determines the beginning of months through moon sightings, making Ramadan shift slightly earlier each year. In Saudi Arabia, the Judicial High Court will assess testimonies from moon sighters before making an official announcement.

Mohammad Odeh, Chairman of the International Astronomical Centre in Abu Dhabi, stated, "The crescent moon will be visible through telescopes in West Asia, most of Africa and southern Europe, while large parts of the Americas may witness it with the naked eye." If sighted on February 28, fasting in Saudi Arabia and the UAE will begin on March 1. If not, Ramadan will commence on March 2.

When Will Ramadan Begin in South Asia?

In South Asian nations like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, the moon sighting will take place a day later, on March 1. If the crescent is observed, fasting will begin on March 2. Otherwise, the holy month will start on March 3. The date of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, will also depend on the lunar cycle and is expected on March 30 or 31.

The Spiritual Significance of Ramadan

Ramadan is much more than fasting. It is a time of spiritual cleansing, self-discipline, and deep devotion. It is believed that the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) during this month, making it especially sacred. Muslims observe Roza, fasting from sunrise to sunset, refraining not just from food and drink but also from negative habits.

The day begins with Sehri, the pre-dawn meal, where families wake early to eat before the fast begins. The fast is broken at sunset with Iftar, a communal meal that brings together family, friends, and even strangers. It is a time of togetherness, generosity, and reflection.

A Global Month of Faith and Unity

Although moon sightings vary by location, the essence of Ramadan remains unchanged. It is a period of renewed faith, patience, and kindness. Charity plays a central role, with millions donating to those in need, reinforcing the values of compassion and gratitude.

As the world turns its gaze to the skies on February 28, hearts fill with anticipation. The journey of Ramadan is about to begin—a journey of faith, sacrifice, and spiritual renewal.
