Upasana Konidela's advice to young women sparked a fierce debate when the entrepreneur suggested women should "freeze eggs" to have kids later and focus on their careers
RRR star Ram Charan and his wife Upasana Konidela have welcomed twins- a baby boy and a baby girl- and have become parents to three. The development was confirmed by Chiranjeevi on social media who wrote, “With immense joy and a heart full of gratitude, we are happy to share that @AlwaysRamCharan and @upasanakonidela have been blessed with twins - a baby boy and a baby girl. Both the babies and the mother are healthy and doing well. Welcoming these little ones into our family is a moment of pure joy and divine blessing for us as grandparents. Ram Charan and Upasana are already parents to a daughter, Klin Kaara, and now they have welcomed their new babies. The speculation about twins started swirling on social media during Diwali 2025, when Upasana shared a video from her baby shower, subtly hinting at the news. “This Diwali was all about double the celebration, double the love and double the blessings,” she wrote at the time. The family later confirmed the pregnancy, expressing excitement over the new additions.

When Upasana Konidela faced backlash for egg-freezing advice

At an interaction with students at IIT Hyderabad, Upasana Konidela's advice to young women sparked a fierce debate when the entrepreneur suggested women should "freeze eggs" to have kids later and focus on their careers. Calling egg freezing "a tool of choice" for women seeking flexibility in marriage, career, and family planning, the wife of South Indian superstar Ram Charan described egg freezing as the "biggest insurance" for women, giving them control over when to marry and have children, once they are financially independent.

"The biggest insurance for women is to freeze their eggs. Because then you can choose when to get married, when you want to have kids, on your own terms, when you are financially independent," Upasana Konidela said in a video she shared on her X handle.

Konidela said in the accompanying post that when she asked IIT Hyderabad students how many of them wanted to get married, "more men raised their hands than women". "The women seemed far more career-focused. This is the new—Progressive India," she posted on X.

Her remarks went viral online in no time, with doctors suggesting "biology doesn't care about a career timeline", and netizens accused her of promoting IVF and fertility clinics. Many pointed that she is promoting IVF and fertility clinics and pointed to her family's connections as she is the granddaughter of Apollo Hospitals founder Prathap C. Reddy. Many also pointed out that her advice is applicable to the privileged few who can afford the high costs of egg freezing and storage.

Facing backlash over her remarks, Upasana broke her silence on the matter and called it a 'healthy debate'. She took to her X handle to respond and reiterated her intention behind the conversation, expressing satisfaction that her comments had sparked public dialogue.

"I'm happy to have sparked a healthy debate & thank your for your respectful responses. Stay tuned as I voice my opinions on the pleasures/pressures of privilege - that u all have been talking about," she wrote.

She also encouraged people to review the facts she shared in her accompanying images, adding, "Don't forget to check out my images! It has very important facts that will help you make the right comments."

What is egg freezing?

Egg freezing, also known as oocyte cryopreservation, is the process of extracting eggs from the ovaries to preserve them, so they can be used to try and become pregnant at a later stage. During this process, a woman or person with ovaries’ eggs (oocytes) are extracted, frozen, and stored. The frozen eggs can later be thawed and used in a procedure called in vitro fertilization (IVF) in order for the individual to try and become pregnant.

The perks: Why some people choose egg freezing

Freezing eggs at a younger age (ideally before mid-30s) preserves better egg quality and improves future pregnancy chances.

Egg freezing extends the reproductive window, offering more time for family planning.

Provides a sense of control and peace of mind, especially for women focusing on career, education, or waiting for the right partner.

Reduces the pressure to rush into motherhood due to the biological clock.

Medically recommended before treatments like chemotherapy that may harm future fertility.

The cons and real limits: What it does not guarantee

Egg freezing does not guarantee a future baby.

Each frozen egg has a relatively low chance of resulting in a live birth; success depends on age and lab quality.

Multiple eggs are usually needed to meaningfully improve the odds.

The process is expensive: procedure, yearly storage, and future IVF costs are often not covered by insurance.

Many women never return to use their frozen eggs, making it an unused (and costly) backup.

Risk factors to consider

Short-term side effects: Hormone injections may cause bloating, mood swings, and discomfort. Egg retrieval carries small risks of bleeding, infection, or pain.

Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS): A rare but potentially serious reaction to fertility drugs requiring close monitoring.

Storage and technical risks: Despite effective vitrification, rare lab errors or equipment failures remain possible, even in accredited clinics.
