Raksha Bandhan 2026: UP announces free bus travel for women and one companion from August 27 night to August 28

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed that women travelling with one companion be allowed to travel free of charge on Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) buses from the night of August 27 to the night of August 28 for Raksha Bandhan. He instructed the Transport Department, police and local administration to coordinate closely to ensure women can travel safely and conveniently during the festival.

Focus on women's safety

The chief minister directed authorities to keep 'Anti-Romeo Squads' active and improve traffic management on major routes during the festival. He also ordered strict screening of bus drivers and said that no driver under the influence of intoxicants should be allowed to operate a bus. Private bus drivers must also be properly verified.

Authorities were further asked to verify auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers and take necessary steps to protect female passengers.

Action on waterlogging

Adityanath also reviewed the waterlogging situation across the state and directed officials to identify low-lying areas and set up additional pumping stations wherever required.

He ordered immediate cleaning of drains blocked by silt, garbage or other obstructions. Officials were also told to identify and remove encroachments on drains.

Mayors and heads of municipal councils and town panchayats were instructed to inspect waterlogging and sanitation arrangements on the ground along with local councillors.
