Rajpal Yadav cheque bounce case: Why was the Hera Pheri actor sent to Tihar Jail?

Actor Rajpal Yadav on Thursday surrendered before the Tihar Jail authorities here, after the Delhi High Court refused to extend the deadline in connection with his conviction in cheque-bounce cases.

The high court on Wednesday refused to extend the deadline given to Yadav for surrendering to the jail authorities.

The counsel for Yadav, who was on February 2 directed to surrender by 4 pm on Wednesday, had told the court that the actor had arranged a sum of Rs 50 lakh and sought one more week to make the payment.


Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma, however, rejected Yadav's application seeking extension of time to surrender, saying there was no ground to grant him the relief.

What are the allegations? M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd was the complainant in the case against actor Rajpal Yadav and his wife. The company alleged that Yadav had taken a loan of ₹5 crore in 2010 for the production of the film Ata Pata Lapata, with an assurance to repay ₹8 crore, but failed to honour the commitment, HT had earlier reported.

The firm further claimed that the settlement amount was later revised to ₹7 crore, but the seven cheques issued towards repayment were dishonoured.

In its February 2 order, the Delhi High Court noted that Yadav was required to pay ₹1.35 crore in each of the seven cases filed against him. The court also observed that despite extensions granted on the suspension of his jail sentence, Yadav repeatedly violated his undertakings to repay the amount to the complainant.

According to PTI, the court recorded that two demand drafts worth ₹75 lakh were deposited with the Registrar General in October 2025, while an amount of ₹9 crore remained unpaid.
