Rajkumar Santoshi’s ‘Gandhi Godse-Ek Yudh’ swept away on box office amid 'Pathaan' wave

As Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan dominates the box office, Rajkumar Santoshi's comeback film ‘Gandhi Godse-Ek Yudh’ had a terrible start. Despite having a sizable release on Republic Day, the historical drama only made Rs 80 lakhs on its first day.

‘Gandhi Godse-Ek Yudh’ is a fictionalised representation of a situation in which Mahatma Gandhi survives Nathuram Godse's murder attempt. The movie follows these two as they cross paths and clash in thought. Tanisha Santoshi, the director's daughter, makes her film debut with Chinmay Mandlekar and Deepak Antani.

The movie was in a vulnerable position since it competed with Yash Raj Films' massive action-thriller ‘Pathaan’. ‘Gandhi Godse-Ek Yudh' only aired on 300 screens, whereas ‘Pathaan’ took over the majority of theatres in India.

However, it also had unbelievably low foot traffic, with just 18% occupancy on the day of its release. Comparatively, Pathaan achieved 65% occupancy across roughly 5000 screens on the day.

Another setback for ‘Gandhi Godse-Ek Yudh’ is that Shah Rukh Khan's film broke many records in its first two days, which prompted several exhibitors to increase their shows and screens.

The Santoshi movie's early trends don't appear promising. If its current performance continues, it may struggle to even break the Rs 10-crore mark. Nevertheless, considering the subject and lack of prominent actors, the movie's failure is hardly shocking. It means that the movie might just have to wait until it becomes available on streaming services in a few weeks to find its audience.
