Rajasthan man opens bank app to check balance, finds Rs 1 lakh crore lien on account where he had Rs 55,000; bank blocks his entire savings.

A 22-year-old medical store employee in Rajasthan's Sikar was left shocked when he opened his Kotak Bank application to recharge his mobile phone and discovered a lien of Rs 1 lakh crore on his account. The application showed a zero balance, and he could not access the ₹55,000 he had deposited in the account.

Sameer Khan, who earns a monthly salary of Rs 10,000 working at a medical store, approached the cyber police after discovering the block. The incident was eventually traced to a technical glitch. Police confirmed that no such amount had actually been credited to or blocked in his account, and the hold on his Rs 55,000 was subsequently lifted, PTI reports. Additional details about Khan's age, salary and the incident were reported by Bhaskar English.

Man discovers Rs 1 lakh crore lien while trying to recharge phone

According to Bhaskar English, Khan works at Nirmal Medical Point, a medical store near Salasar bus stand in Sikar. He had been working there for around 10 months and earns ₹10,000 a month.

On Wednesday, October 28, Khan opened his Kotak Bank application to make a payment because he needed to recharge his mobile phone.

After entering his PIN, he checked his account balance and found that it showed zero. When he examined the details further, he discovered that a lien of ₹1 lakh crore had been placed on his account.

The figure was particularly startling given that Khan had only ₹55,000 in his account.

A lien is an amount that a bank marks or holds against an account, restricting the account holder's ability to use the affected funds. In Khan's case, the displayed lien was so large that his existing savings also became inaccessible.

Khan informed the medical store owner, Dheeraj Matolia, and other staff members about what he had discovered.

Medical store worker approaches cyber police

Unable to understand why his account had suddenly become inaccessible, Khan approached the Sikar Cyber Police Station along with the medical store owner.

According to PTI, Assistant Sub-Inspector Deendayal of the Sikar Cyber Police Station confirmed that Khan was a resident of the Kotwali police station area and worked at a medical store near the bus stand.

Khan had received a message stating that Rs 1 lakh crore had been blocked in his account while he was recharging his mobile phone.

The incident also meant that he could not access the Rs 55,000 already deposited in the account. The problem was therefore not limited to an incorrect figure appearing in a banking message; his own money had also become temporarily unavailable.

Bank and police identify technical glitch

Following the complaint, the police investigated the matter and Khan contacted his bank.

The bank verified that the message was generated because of a technical error. The police also confirmed that no ₹1 lakh crore had actually been credited to his account or blocked there.

This established that the unusually large lien figure was an erroneous alert rather than an actual transaction involving that amount.

The bank subsequently lifted the hold on Khan's Rs 55,000, Assistant Sub-Inspector Deendayal told PTI.

What happened to the Rs 55,000?

Khan's immediate problem was resolved after the bank verified the technical glitch and removed the hold on his deposited money.

The incident had started with an ordinary mobile recharge attempt. Instead of completing the payment, Khan found a zero balance and a Rs 1 lakh crore lien on his account. He then had to approach the medical store owner and cyber police to understand why his savings were inaccessible.

The police confirmed that the alert was caused by a technical error, and Khan's Rs 55,000 was released.
