Delhi Weather Forecast: Rain, strong winds and cooler days
Delhi is likely to see multiple spells of light rain along with gusty winds between Wednesday and Friday. Wind speeds may reach 40–50 kmph, especially on Thursday and Friday, when a yellow alert is in place.“Heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, is very likely to occur at isolated places over Faridabad and Gurugram.”
Temperatures, which recently crossed normal levels, are expected to ease. The maximum may drop from around 32–34°C to nearly 27–29°C by Friday under cloudy skies.
“The maximum may hover between 29°C and 31°C on Thursday and decrease further, to between 27°C and 29°C on Friday,” said IMD.
“After the spell of rain on Monday morning, a second western disturbance will impact northwest India from Wednesday. Two successive western disturbances like these tend to keep mercury in check for at least a week, particularly when there is rainfall,” IMD said.
Western disturbance to impact hill states
The hill states — Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir — are expected to receive rain and snowfall between March 18 and 20. Isolated heavy precipitation is likely, along with chances of hailstorms in some areas. This system is part of a fresh western disturbance that is moving across northwest India, bringing active weather conditions.
Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan on alert for storms
Plains across Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan are likely to experience scattered rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over the next few days. Gusty winds may pick up speed, touching up to 50 kmph. The weather office has also warned of hailstorm activity at isolated places across these states during the forecast period.
Hailstorm risk across north and central India
Beyond the northwest, hailstorms have been flagged for several regions including Madhya Pradesh and parts of central India. Thundersqualls with wind speeds of up to 60–70 kmph may occur at isolated locations. What is driving this sudden change
The current spell is being driven by successive western disturbances interacting with local weather systems. This has created unstable conditions across large parts of the country, leading to rain, lightning and sudden wind activity. For residents across Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, the next few days may bring fast-changing weather — from bright mornings to stormy evenings. While the rain may offer relief from heat, strong winds and hail could disrupt daily routines in some areas.
The weather department has indicated that these active conditions will likely continue till March 21 before easing gradually.
With multiple weather systems active at once, large parts of India are set to experience fast-changing conditions over the next few days. While no major warnings have been issued beyond March 21, the current pattern suggests that rain, wind and cooler temperatures will dominate the short-term outlook across regions.
