प्राचीन समय की बात है। सुकृत्मान नामक एक राजा और उनकी पत्नी रानी शैब्या अपने राज्य पर न्यायपूर्वक शासन करते थे। सब कुछ होने के बावजूद उनके जीवन में एक कमी थी,उन्हें कोई संतान नहीं थी। संतान न होने के कारण राजा और रानी दोनों ही बहुत दुखी रहते थे।


बढ़ती उम्र के साथ राजा को चिंता होने लगी कि उनके बाद राज्य और वंश का क्या होगा। इसी चिंता में एक दिन राजा और रानी वन की ओर निकल पड़े। भ्रमण करते हुए वे महर्षि लोमेश के आश्रम पहुँचे। महर्षि ने उनका स्वागत किया और दुख का कारण पूछा।

राजा ने अपनी पीड़ा बताई। तब महर्षि लोमेश ने कहा कि यह पूर्व जन्म के कर्मों का फल है, लेकिन इसका उपाय भी है। महर्षि ने राजा और रानी को पौष माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी, यानी पुत्रदा एकादशी का विधिपूर्वक व्रत रखने की सलाह दी।

महर्षि के कहने पर राजा और रानी ने पूरे श्रद्धा और नियम के साथ एकादशी व्रत किया। उन्होंने भगवान विष्णु की पूजा की, रात्रि जागरण किया और व्रत के सभी नियमों का पालन किया।

राजा और रानी की भक्ति से प्रसन्न होकर भगवान विष्णु प्रकट हुए और उन्हें उत्तम संतान का वरदान दिया। कुछ समय बाद रानी ने एक तेजस्वी पुत्र को जन्म दिया, जो आगे चलकर एक योग्य और धर्मप्रिय राजा बना।

ऐसी मान्यता है कि तभी से पौष पुत्रदा एकादशी का व्रत संतान सुख, परिवार की खुशहाली और जीवन की बाधाओं को दूर करने वाला माना जाता है।
