Gippy Grewal was born into a farming family and had to borrow money to finance his first music album. However, the album failed to make a significant impact. His second album also did not perform well.

Despite the setbacks, Grewal continued pursuing music. After moving to Canada with his wife, Ravneet Kaur, he decided to release another album.

His third album proved to be a turning point in his career, with the song Phulkari becoming a major hit.

He said he worked as a security guard because he needed to earn enough to pay the bills while building his career as a singer.

One of his assignments involved guarding a closed factory overnight. He had to inspect the premises at regular intervals and report that everything was secure.

Grewal also recalled that his English was limited at the time. He said he had to memorise the line he was expected to use while making his security reports.

Security work was not the only job Grewal took up in Canada. He and his wife also worked at a shopping mall.

While Ravneet Kaur cleared trays from the food court, Grewal handled cleaning duties. His work included sweeping floors and cleaning toilets.

Grewal recalled that the mall job paid around 13 Canadian dollars, which he said was more than what he earned at some of his other jobs.

He said he would earn around eight Canadian dollars in some jobs, while the mall cleaning work could bring in nearly 13 Canadian dollars.

The actor-singer explained that such jobs were simply part of their effort to build a stable life in Canada.

He recalled finishing his security shift at around 4 am before picking up Ravneet Kaur. The couple would then spend the next couple of hours delivering newspapers.

Despite the tiring schedule, Grewal said they looked at the newspaper rounds as time they could spend together. The couple would talk throughout the journey while completing their work.

Gippy Grewal eventually expanded his career beyond singing and established himself as an actor, producer and filmmaker.

He became one of the prominent names in Punjabi cinema, with the Carry On Jatta franchise becoming one of the best-known comedy film series associated with him.

He is now gearing up for Carry On Jatta 4, directed by Smeep Kang and co-starring Sargun Mehta and Binnu Dhillon. The film is scheduled to arrive in theatres on June 26.
