Rain in Pune
Pune has received the highest rainfall in the month of April since 1896, reports Indian Express dumping 84mm rain over NDA and 65mm in Shivajinagar. The sudden downpour turned fatal in the Parvati area, where a 60-year-old flower vendor, Ranjana Navnath Giridhar, died after a tree fell on her around 3.30pm. Will it rain tomorrow in Pune?
The IMD has issued an orange alert, indicating hailstorms, for Marthwada on April 3, followed by two days of yellow alert for thunderstorm, lightning and squall. In Vidarbha, a yellow alert extends to April 5, indicating that people should prepare for thunderstorms and lightning. On Friday, neither of these districts received significant rainfall.The IMD had issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms with lightning and rain in Pune and its suburbs till April 4. Several parts of the city witnessed severe flooding, with visuals showing vehicles partially submerged on key roads and commuters struggling to navigate through knee-deep
Power supply in many areas, including Kondhwa, Kothrud, Hadapsar and Dhayari, was also affected. Emergency response teams were deployed across the city.
“There is a trough in the Easterlies, stretching from south Tamil Nadu to the North Konkan coast. This is not the only system. We also have a western disturbance in Northwest India that has caused a jet stream to move a little southward. These factors are conducive to the formation of thunderclouds and the occurrence of thunderstorms and hailstorms,” S D Sanap, scientist with IMD Pune, told The Indian Express.
“Thursday’s record-breaking April rainfall over Pune was driven by lower-level wind convergence, further enhanced by upper-level divergence ahead of an approaching southward-dipping western disturbance trough. This set-up promoted rapid uplift of warm air, while moisture incursion from the Arabian Sea provided the necessary fuel, resulting in intense convective activity,” an independent forecaster Abhijit Modak was quoted as saying by TOI.
