Pune rain today (July 7): IMD orange alert in effect as 5 die in rain-related incidents in two days; Pune records 264.8 mm rain in 6 days, IndiGo issues travel advisory

Heavy rain continued to batter Pune and nearby areas on Monday, leading to multiple tragedies across the district. At least five people have died in separate rain-related incidents over the past two days as Maharashtra remains under the influence of an active monsoon spell and an orange Alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The deaths were reported from a landslide in Patan, a wall collapse in Pimpri-Chinchwad and a flooding-related incident in Khed tehsil, highlighting the dangers posed by continuous rainfall across the region.

Pune schools, colleges shut today amid rain alert

Amid persistent heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions, Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi has declared a holiday for all schools in seven talukas of Pune district on Tuesday, July 7.

The closure applies to educational institutions in Junnar, Ambegaon, Khed, Maval, Mulshi, Rajgad and Bhor talukas. The order covers all types of schools and childcare centres, including Zilla Parishad schools, municipal schools, Ashram schools, private schools, aided and unaided institutions, English-medium schools, as well as all Anganwadi centres operating in these areas.

Schools located in Pune city and nearby urban areas, however, will remain open and function as usual.

Authorities have advised parents and students in the affected talukas to take note of the holiday announcement and exercise caution as heavy rain continues across parts of the district.

IndiGo issues travel advisory

Air travelers flying to or from Mumbai and Pune may face disruptions due to heavy rainfall affecting flight operations in both cities, IndiGo said in its travel advisory.

In a travel advisory issued on Monday, airlines urged passengers to check the latest status of their flights through the airline's website or mobile app before heading to the airport.

Pune records more than a month's rain in less than a week

Pune has already received 264.8 mm of rainfall in the first six days of July, surpassing its normal monthly rainfall quota for the month, according to weather data. The relentless downpour has caused waterlogging, traffic disruptions and heightened concerns over landslides and flooding in vulnerable areas.

With more rain forecast in the coming days, authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.

Three killed in Patan landslide

According to Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi, three people lost their lives in a landslide incident at Patan. The landslide occurred amid heavy rain and is among the deadliest weather-related incidents reported in the district during the current monsoon spell.

Emergency teams were rushed to the site after the incident was reported.

Wall collapse claims one life in Pimpri-Chinchwad

In another incident linked to the ongoing rain, one person died after a wall collapsed in the Nigdi area of Pimpri-Chinchwad on Sunday. Heavy rainfall is believed to have weakened the structure, leading to the collapse. Local authorities responded to the scene and launched rescue and relief operations.

Motorcyclist swept away in Khed

Another fatality was reported from Khed tehsil, where a motorcycle rider was swept away by strong water currents while attempting to cross a rain-affected stretch.

Rescue teams later recovered the rider's body.

Officials have repeatedly warned people against driving or walking through flooded roads and fast-moving water during heavy rainfall.

Rescue operation launched after Maval landslide

A separate landslide incident was reported on Monday in Patal village of Maval tehsil.

"A person died during the landslide incident that occurred on Monday in the Patal village of Maval Tensil of Pune district. Two more persons are feared trapped beneath the debris."

The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday and triggered an emergency response as authorities rushed to the site.

"Following the distress call, the District Information Office confirmed that immediate assistance was requested from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). A specialised 30-member team from the 5th Battalion, stationed in Pune, was rapidly deployed to the site, according to the District Information Office, Pune."

Rescue personnel have been carrying out search operations amid challenging weather conditions.

IMD Orange Alert remains in effect

The IMD has placed parts of Maharashtra, including Pune district, under an Orange Alert as intense rainfall activity continues across the state. Weather officials have warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have advised residents living in landslide-prone and low-lying areas to remain alert.

Pune weather outlook

Rainfall activity is expected to continue across Pune over the next few days, with cloudy skies, frequent showers and the possibility of heavy rain in some areas.

Given the saturated ground conditions and rising water levels in streams and rivers, officials have urged people to follow weather advisories, avoid risky travel routes and report emergencies immediately.

As the monsoon intensifies, Pune remains on high alert, with disaster response teams prepared for further rain-related emergencies.
