Protests by factory workers demanding a hike in wages turned violent in parts of Noida on Monday. According to police, incidents of arson, vandalism and stone-pelting were reported from Phase-2 and Sector 60 areas. The unrest in Noida had been going on for the past three days and on Sunday, the District Magistrate of Noida Medha Roopam held a meeting with the state’s Principal Secretary (Labour) and Labour commissioner, where issues related to workers’ rights and industrial peace were discussed. In an official statement posted on X, she said the meeting focused on “protection of workers’ interests, double payment for overtime, bonus, weekly holidays, and workplace safety.”

The District Magistrate of Gautam Buddh Nagar urged workers to stay calm and continue their work, as the administration introduced new measures to maintain industrial harmony in the district.



The DM said that meetings were held over the past few days with industrial units, and key decisions have been taken that will be strictly followed across all factories. Workers will now get double pay for overtime without any deductions. They will also receive a weekly holiday, and if they work on Sundays, they will be paid double wages.

The administration also assured that bonuses will be paid by November 30 directly into workers’ bank accounts. Every factory must set up an Internal Committee led by a woman to prevent workplace harassment. Complaint boxes will be installed, and workers will be treated with respect. Workers have been advised to ignore rumours and misinformation and support efforts to maintain peace and law and order in the district.

Relief measures for workers

The unrest came after two days of protests by factory workers over low minimum wages in the industrial belt. In response, the Noida administration on Sunday announced a series of measures aimed at addressing worker grievances.

“It announced a compulsory weekly off for all workers, double pay for overtime and work on weekly holidays, annual bonus before Nov 30, salary disbursal by the 10th of every month, medical cover, workplace safety measures and a formal complaints system to address harassment.”

On Monday, protests escalated into violence as some participants allegedly vandalised property, pelted stones and set a vehicle on fire.

Vehicles and other property were damaged during the unrest, while commuters faced severe inconvenience due to traffic congestion in the affected areas.

Adequate police deployment has been ensured across industrial zones under the Gautam Buddh Nagar Commissionerate, officials said, adding that senior police and administrative officers are present on the ground to monitor the situation.
