On Diwali weekend, Sivakarthikeyan's romantic comedy Prince competed with Karthi's star-studded spy thriller Sardar.
The film garnered mixed reviews from audiences and critics, with half describing it as an entertainer and the other half stating it fell short of their expectations.
The romantic comedy depicts the humorous drama in which Sivakarthikeyan's character, a teacher, falls in love with a British teacher, played by Maria Riaboshapka, while they work at the same school. The entire town is pitted against the film's main character, and the latter wins them over with turmoil and amusement.
Sivakarthikeyan managed to hold the film with his charming looks and strong performances, while Maria Ryaboshapka and Premgi Amaren offered good support.
Reportedly, Prince had a good first day in India, earning Rs 5 crore. According to the survey, the film achieved an overall 29.85% occupancy in theatres, with the highest being in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. According to sources, the Anudeep KV-directed spy thriller Sardar earned Rs 3.7 crore on its first day. The actor plays a double part in the PS Mithran-directed film, which earned higher reviews than Prince.
Anudeep KV rose to prominence with the success of his Telugu comedy-drama Jathi Ratnalu, starring Naveen Polishetty, Priyadarshi, and Rahul Ramakrishna, last year. The film earned Rs 70 crore at the international box office despite being made on a shoestring budget of roughly Rs 4 crore.
Prince is Sivakarthikeyan's second theatrical release of the year, following the May release of the coming-of-age comedy-drama Don. Cibi Chakaravarthi's directorial debut, the film was a huge hit, apparently crossing the Rs 100 crore mark at the global box office.
