Pradosh Vrat 2023: Check fast timing, puja tithi, rituals and other details

Pradosha is the occasion on the thirteenth day of both the waxing and waning lunar phases, known as Trayodashi, in the Hindu calendar. The word 'Pradosh' derives its meaning from 'Pradosham' meaning the 'removal of sins' or 'removal of darkness.'

This vrat is observed twice a month. It holds great significance for devotees of Lord Shiva.

Usually, Pradosh Kaal timings lie in the evening twilight i.e. 'Sandhyakal'.


It is believed that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are extremely pleased during this time and grant their devotees their heartfelt wishes. Devotees believe that observing Pradosh vrat or donating two cows helps you reap the same reward.

Fasting: People follow a strict fast from sunrise to sunset on the day of Pradosh Vrat. Some go for a full-day fast without consuming any food or water.

Puja: In the evening, devotees take bath, wear clean clothes and decorate the puja area with flowers, incense, etc.

Puja rituals: The main puja is performed during Pradosh Kaal, which occurs approximately one and a half hours before sunset. Devotees light a lamp and offer prayers to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. They chant sacred mantras.

Abhishekam: This is ritualistic bathing of Lord Shiva’s idol or lingam with water, milk, honey, and sandalwood paste.

Prasad: Devotees offer fruits, flowers, betel leaves, and other favorite delicacies of Lord Shiva as a form of prasad.

The fast is usually broken after the completion of the puja and prayers. Devoteestake simple meal that includes fruits, milk, and other sattvic foods.
