PM Modi’s 'twitter fight' joke to Macron goes viral, and the internet can’t stop watching or making memes

At the 51st G7 Summit (June 16–17) in Kananaskis, Canada, Prime Minister Narendra Modi cracked a cheeky remark that left French President Emmanuel Macron, and the internet, in splits.

As the two leaders shared a warm hug and handshake, Modi smiled and quipped, “Nowadays, you are fighting on Twitter?”

Macron burst into laughter, and so did those standing nearby.


While it wasn’t clear if Modi was referring to Macron’s recent online spat with former US President Donald Trump, many social media users believed it was a nod to their digital face-off over Israel–Iran diplomacy.

The clip of Modi’s comment spread quickly across platforms like X and Instagram. One user posted, “Modi trolling Trump internationally and intentionally.”

Another joked, “The world stage is wild right now.”



Amid the laughter, Macron greeted India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. He also asked Modi when he arrived, to which the Indian PM replied, “I reached here last night, and before that, I went to Cyprus.”

Later, Modi shared a post on X saying, “Always a delight to interact with my friend, President Emmanuel Macron … India and France will keep working closely for the betterment of our planet.”

Another clip from the sidelines of the summit quickly captured attention. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni greeted Modi with a big smile and said: “You are the best. I am trying to be as you.”

Modi laughed and shook her hand, clearly enjoying the friendly exchange.


The brief interaction revived the affectionate hashtag #Melodi, a blend of their names, which first gained popularity during their meetings at COP28 and the G20 Summit in India.
