PM Modi garba video not deepfake, just fake news, confirms his doppelganger

Recently, a video went viral depicting a man who bore a striking resemblance to Prime Minister Narendra Modi participating in a garba dance. The authenticity of the video was initially questioned, with speculation that it might be a deepfake. Prime Minister Modi himself acknowledged the video, expressing doubts about its authenticity. However, it has now been clarified that the video was not a result of deepfake technology but rather a case of mistaken identity and false reporting.

The individual in the video is Vikas Mahante, a Mumbai-based businessman and the proprietor of a steel packaging business in Malad. Mahante unintentionally found himself thrust into the limelight due to his resemblance to Prime Minister Modi. His uncanny similarity led to an invitation to London to partake in pre-Diwali festivities within the admirer's family circle. It was during this event that Mahante was mistakenly identified as Modi and filmed participating in the garba dance, causing a significant stir.

In a video statement addressing the confusion, Mahante conveyed a mix of humility and pride. He clarified that he often receives invitations to various functions in India and abroad, where he attempts to convey Modi's thoughts and ideas. Emphasizing that the garba video was not a result of deepfake technology, Mahante reiterated that he is simply Vikas Mahante, a businessman and an artist.

The circulating video clips lacked crucial context, leading numerous viewers to believe falsely that it was Prime Minister Modi participating in the dance. This incident underscores the significance of providing accurate information on social media platforms.

Mahante reminisced about a brief encounter with Modi in 2013, introduced by Gujarat MLA Ramanbhai Patkar in Gandhinagar. Despite the brevity of their interaction, Mahante expressed disappointment at not being permitted to take a photograph with the Prime Minister.

Currently, Mahante's steel packaging unit in Vasai is managed by his sons, while he juggles a hectic schedule of appearances. He attends various ribbon-cutting ceremonies and events, primarily at the request of BJP supporters. Mahante's agenda is booked well into the future, with commitments to numerous events in November, including the London function. His role primarily involves standing alongside political candidates on trucks during roadshows and occasionally delivering short speeches.

Mahante's steadfast dedication to promoting the BJP's message since 2014 is evident. Actively involved in campaigning for various politicians, he is also part of an upcoming biopic on Modi, where he portrays the Prime Minister. Spending extensive hours studying Modi's mannerisms and speeches, Mahante aspires to emulate the PM's voice and demeanor with varying degrees of success. He remains optimistic that his dedication will eventually lead to greater responsibilities within the party.
