A social media post by a developer has gone viral on social media. When his father underwent cataract surgery, an Indian software developer suddenly found himself helping out with even the simplest of smartphone tasks, sending a message, checking a call, or opening an app. What began as small acts of daily assistance soon sparked a bigger question in his mind: what happens to people with limited vision who don’t always have someone around to help?

That question pushed him into weeks of tinkering, failed experiments, and long nights of trial and error. An Indian developer built an open-source project that allows people to control their Android phones entirely through voice commands powered by a language model. The tool was first tested to send WhatsApp messages by simply speaking instructions such as, “Please message Dad asking about his health.” The system then opens the app, selects the right contact, types the message, and sends it without the user touching the screen.

Inspiration from a personal challenge

The idea took shape when the developer’s father underwent cataract surgery and struggled to use his phone during recovery. To reduce dependence on others, the developer began experimenting with ways to create a “browser-use” style solution but tailored for smartphones. Early versions were unstable, but continuous trials led to a functioning prototype.

Initial posts about the project drew limited attention online. The breakthrough came after connecting with NGOs and individuals with vision impairment, who not only supported the idea but also provided key feedback to make it more accessible. Their response prompted the developer to improve features and focus on usability for people with disabilities.

Recognition and opportunities

A recent demo shared online attracted strong interest, resulting in nearly 170 stars on GitHub and three job offers—two from companies in the accessibility technology space and one from an NGO. The developer has not yet finalised the next step but is committed to continuing work on the problem of smartphone accessibility.
