In an official statement, the magazine emphasized its commitment to free expression and constructive political debate but asserted a zero-tolerance policy towards hate speech.
The controversy began with Khalifa's social media post expressing solidarity with Hamas militants, urging support for Palestinians. She faced backlash for invoking the apartheid analogy and subsequently escalated tensions by encouraging freedom fighters in Palestine to document events in high-quality footage, intending to preserve a historical record.
Khalifa had earlier challenged Kylie Jenner's stance on the issue, who had posted and later deleted a message expressing support for Israel. She questioned Jenner's geopolitical understanding, emphasizing the responsibility of influencers to engage thoughtfully in global issues.
The repercussions of Khalifa's posts also affected a business deal with Canadian radio personality Todd Shapiro. In the process of finalizing an agreement, Shapiro announced Khalifa's immediate termination citing her tweet as "horrendous" and urging her to evolve into a better human being.
The controversy unfolded amidst the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, with the death toll surpassing 1,600 on both sides.
