Aluminium foil under washing machine

A sheet of aluminium foil under a washing machine may sound like one of those quick household hacks that can solve a surprisingly annoying problem. But while foil can be useful in certain situations, it is not a proper substitute for a washing machine drip tray or a repair.

So, why do people place aluminium foil under a washing machine, and does the trick actually work?

Why do people put aluminium foil under a washing machine?

The idea is mainly linked to protecting the floor from small amounts of water. A sheet of foil can act as a temporary barrier and make it easier to notice a few drips underneath the appliance.

However, aluminium foil is thin and can tear, shift or develop holes, particularly underneath a heavy appliance that vibrates during the spin cycle.

A washing machine should therefore not be placed on foil as a long-term leak-prevention measure.

Can aluminium foil protect your floor from water leaks?

Only to a limited extent. If a washing machine develops a small leak, foil might temporarily catch or redirect a small amount of water. But it cannot contain a significant leak, and water can easily run underneath or around the sheet.

Manufacturers recommend addressing the source of a leak rather than relying on a temporary covering. Common causes can include loose or damaged inlet hoses, problems with the drain hose, blocked plumbing or internal component issues.

What should you use instead of aluminium foil?

A washing machine drip tray or floor tray is a much more suitable option.

These trays are specifically designed to sit underneath the appliance and help protect flooring from spills, leaks and overflow. Some models can also be connected to a drain for additional protection.

Before installing one, check your washing machine's instructions because the appliance may need to be raised or its feet adjusted to maintain proper levelling.

What if your washing machine is already leaking?

Don't simply cover the leak with foil and carry on using the machine.

First, stop the appliance and, where it is safe to do so, switch off the water supply. If water has reached electrical connections or is standing around the appliance, avoid handling electrical components while standing in water. Manufacturer guidance recommends switching off the machine and water supply before troubleshooting a leak.

Then check the accessible inlet and drain hoses for loose connections, cracks or other visible damage. If the leak appears to be coming from inside the machine, professional servicing may be necessary.

Can aluminium foil reduce washing machine vibration?

There is no good reason to use aluminium foil for this purpose.

A washing machine needs to sit level, with its feet firmly in contact with the floor. An uneven appliance can become unbalanced, resulting in excessive noise and vibration during the spin cycle.

Adding a loose layer of foil underneath the appliance could potentially move or tear as the machine vibrates, so it is not an appropriate solution for an unstable washing machine.

Is the aluminium foil washing machine hack worth trying?

For a temporary way of spotting a tiny drip, foil may have some limited usefulness. But it should not be treated as a waterproof barrier, vibration pad or leak solution.

If your goal is to protect the floor, a purpose-built washing machine drip tray is the better choice. And if the appliance is leaking, finding and fixing the source of the water is far more important than covering the floor underneath it.
