Nostalgia is taking over social media as users turn to artificial intelligence to reimagine themselves in the style of the 1980s. The viral photo trend transforms regular selfies into retro-looking portraits that resemble old family albums or classic Bollywood studio photographs.

Known as the ChatGPT 80s photo trend, it has now caught the attention of more than just influencers and celebrities. Several Indian politicians have also joined the trend, sharing AI-generated pictures inspired by the decade’s fashion, hairstyles and photography styles.

Piyush Goyal Joins The Viral Trend

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal was among the political figures to take part in the trend. Sharing an AI-generated picture on social media, Goyal captioned it, "Vibing to the 80s trend."


In the AI-created portrait, Goyal can be seen wearing a suit with a white shirt and aviator sunglasses.

How The ChatGPT 80s Photo Trend Works

The trend goes beyond simply applying a retro filter to an existing photograph. Users can ask an AI image-generation tool to recreate their appearance as if the photograph had originally been taken during the 1980s.

Prompts can be used to preserve recognisable facial features while changing elements such as clothing, hairstyles, accessories, poses, backgrounds and lighting.
