April Pink Moon: When and where to watch
The Pink Moon will reach its peak on April 2 at 02:11 UTC, which corresponds to around 7:41 AM IST. However, the best time to view it in India will be during the night of April 1-2, when the Moon will appear full to the naked eye.The event will be visible across the country, provided skies remain clear. Observers are advised to step out after sunset, choose open areas with minimal light pollution and enjoy the view without the need for telescopes.
Why the Moon may appear brighter
Astronomically, a full Moon occurs when the Earth lies directly between the Sun and the Moon, a configuration known as syzygy, allowing the Moon’s surface to be fully illuminated.According to NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the 2026 Pink Moon coincides closely with the spring equinox, influencing the Moon’s tilt and the way sunlight reflects off its surface.
This alignment can also trigger an “opposition surge”, a phenomenon where the Moon appears unusually bright due to the absence of visible shadows from craters when viewed from Earth.
Will the Moon actually look pink?
Despite its name, the Moon will not appear pink. The term “Pink Moon” originates from seasonal naming traditions rather than any actual change in colour. The name was popularised by Native American traditions and later documented in the Old Farmer’s Almanack, referring to the blooming of moss pink, an early spring flower.
However, under certain atmospheric conditions, the Moon may appear slightly reddish or pinkish near the horizon. This happens because its light travels through a thicker layer of Earth’s atmosphere, scattering shorter wavelengths like blue and allowing longer wavelengths such as red to dominate.
Cultural significance and other names
The Pink Moon is one of several full moons named after seasonal changes in nature. It is also known as the Sprouting Grass Moon, Egg Moon and Fish Moon, all of which symbolise renewal and the onset of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. The event combines astronomical alignment with cultural tradition, offering both scientific interest and visual appeal for observers.
