Indian Army has officially released the photographs of seven terrorists neutralized during a sustained campaign to sanitize the Kishtwar region. This major group had been under relentless pursuit since April or May of last year, with security forces maintaining operational momentum through extreme weather conditions, including heavy rains and winter snow. The initial phase of the crackdown saw the elimination of three hardcore terrorists in April 2025, leaving a remnant group led by a commander code-named ‘Saifullah’ on the run.

Operation Trashi-I

Based on collaborative intelligence from the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Intelligence Bureau, security forces launched a joint counter-terrorist mission codenamed Operation Trashi-I on January 14, 2026. The operation involved elite units from the Counter Insurgency Force (CIF) Delta under the White Knight Corps, alongside the Assam Rifles, JKP, and CRPF. By January 18, contact was established with the group, leading to the destruction of a well-stocked and prepared hideout in the Chhatroo region.

Engagements and Neutralization

The pursuit intensified on February 4, 2026, when a close associate of Saifullah, code-named ‘Adil,’ was eliminated during Operation Trashi-I. Simultaneously, two other terrorists were neutralized in a separate mission titled Operation Kiya on the same day. The final stand occurred on the night of February 21, when security forces cordoned off the remaining group members on the steep, rugged slopes of a mountain. On February 22, at approximately 11:00 AM, the terrorists were re-engaged, resulting in the elimination of the final four members of the cell.

Heroics on the Field by Tyson the dog

The operation was supported by real-time surveillance drones and night vision technology, ensuring that the terrorists had no potential route for escape. During the final search of a "Dhok" or mountain shelter, a trained Army dog named Tyson was injured after entering the structure to ascertain the presence of the hidden terrorists. Following the gunfight, security forces recovered a significant cache of war-like stores, including three AK-47 rifles. The Army confirmed that a total of six Pakistan-sponsored terrorists were eliminated within its area of responsibility in just the past 20 days, achieved with zero casualties to security personnel.
