Phalguna Amavasya, which occurs in the Phalguna month in the Hindu calendar, holds special significance and is especially revered. This year, Phalguna Amavasya coincides with a solar eclipse on February 17, Tuesday. On the occasion of Phalguna Amavasya, Hindus honour their ancestors through prayers, holy dips, and charity. Devotees perform rituals like Pitru Puja and Hawan for ancestral peace, underscoring spiritual purification and seeking blessings.

It is significant to note that Phalguna Amavasya is unique this time as it coincides with the Surya Grahan. These two events are taking place on the same day, and people should be extra careful this time. Though, the Surya Grahan will not be visible in India there are a few guidelines, which everyone should follow on this day:

-Charity should be done on this day.


-Feed people and animals.

-Avoid eating, sleeping during at the time of Eclipse.

-One must avoid purchasing, interview, grah pravesh and mundan.

Phalguna Amavasya 2026: Rituals

Phalguna Amavasya is primarily observed to honor ancestors and forefathers. The key rituals include:

Wake up early in the morning and take a holy bath.

Many devotees visit Ganga ghats to take a sacred dip.

The day is considered highly auspicious for charity and donations.

Invite priests and Brahmins to perform Pitru Tarpan or Pitru Puja.

Worship cows and offer the first chapati to a cow, as the day is believed to be spiritually powerful.

Phalguna Amavasya: Do's and don'ts

Do’s:

Feed cows, ants, and crows on this auspicious day.

Take a holy dip in the Ganga River. If visiting the river is not possible, add a few drops of Gangajal to your bath water at home.

Don’ts:

Avoid purchasing clothes and shoes on this day.

Refrain from consuming tamasik food.

Stay away from tamasik activities on this sacred occasion.

Why is Phalguna Amavasya significant?

Lighting a diya beneath a Peepal tree is regarded as spiritually significant. Hawan is conducted for Pitru Shanti (peace of ancestors). Devotees offer sincere prayers and seek blessings from their ancestors. Charity and donations are considered especially virtuous on this day. The occasion is seen as a time for spiritual cleansing and inner purification.
