Will fuel prices rise?

The prices of petrol and diesel are likely to surge upto Rs 5 per litre amid rising global crude oil rates, according to government sources. Reports suggest that state-run fuel retailers may raise petrol and diesel prices in the coming days to offset mounting losses from selling fuel below cost. The prices of domestic LPG cylinders are also likely to go up by Rs 40-50, according to sources.

In March, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had said that OMCs were losing around Rs 24 per litre on petrol and Rs 30 per litre on diesel.

The commercial LPG prices have increased sharply, adding pressure on businesses. The price of a 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder has risen by Rs 993, taking the cost in Delhi to Rs 3,071.50. The 5 kg free trade LPG cylinder has also been hiked by Rs 261. This development comes as global crude oil prices have surged following escalating tensions in West Asia after US and Israeli strikes on Iran earlier this year.
