Oil Marketing companies update petrol and diesel prices daily at 6 AM, aligning them with fluctuations in global crude oil prices and currency exchange rates. The three major OMCs in India are: Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL). OMCs set and revise daily petrol and diesel prices and operate petrol pumps and fuel stations in the country.
Petrol and diesel prices in India have remained largely unchanged since May 2022 after the central government and several states reduced fuel taxes.

Fuel prices are revised daily at 6 am by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). These revisions take into account movements in global crude oil prices. Although fuel rates are linked to market trends, they are also influenced by government regulations such as excise duties, pricing frameworks, and informal price controls.
Key Factors Influencing Fuel Prices in India
Global crude oil prices play a major role in determining fuel rates because crude oil is the primary raw material used to produce petrol and diesel.
Exchange Rate:
India imports a large share of its crude oil. As a result, the value of the Indian rupee against the US dollar significantly impacts fuel costs. When the rupee weakens, fuel prices tend to rise.
Taxes:
A substantial portion of the retail fuel price consists of central and state taxes. Since tax rates differ from state to state, petrol and diesel prices vary across cities.

Refining Costs:
The expense of refining crude oil into petrol and diesel also affects final fuel prices. These costs can change depending on the quality of crude oil and refinery operations.
Demand and Supply:
Fuel prices are also influenced by demand and supply conditions. When demand increases, prices may rise as supply adjusts to meet consumption levels.
