The prices of petrol and diesel on Monday, March 23, 2026, remained steady even as global crude markets remain on edge amid tensions in West Asia and disruptions to key shipping routes. The Indian government has indicated that petrol and diesel prices are expected to remain stable for now despite fluctuations in international oil markets. This is because oil marketing companies (OMCs) are absorbing part of the volatility to avoid sudden price shocks for consumers.

Will prices of petrol and diesel increase?

Oil marketing companies have increased the prices of premium, high-octane petrol variants like XP95 and Power petrol by about ₹2 to ₹2.30 per litre. The revised rates have already come into effect at several fuel stations across the country.

At some outlets, Indian Oil Corporation’s XP95 is now retailing at nearly ₹101.80 per litre. Similarly, premium petrol sold by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited has also become more expensive. This has raised concerns over whether regular petrol and diesel prices could be next in line for a hike.

For now, oil companies are holding back any increase in commonly used fuels, keeping inflation worries in mind. However, with global crude prices climbing and the rupee weakening, the pressure is mounting on major players like Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, and Indian Oil Corporation. If international crude prices stay elevated for a longer period, it may become difficult for these companies to absorb the burden, making a revision in regular fuel prices increasingly likely.
