The prices of petrol and diesel largely remained unchanged on Thursday, March 12, even as oil prices surged nearly 8 percent today amid the ongoing war in the Middle East. West Texas Intermediate surged 8.8% to $95 a barrel, while Brent jumped 8.88% to $100, shrugging off the International Energy Agency’s largest-ever emergency crude release. Despite fluctuations in international oil markets, the Indian government has indicated that petrol and diesel prices are expected to remain stable for now.

Among major Indian cities, Hyderabad and Patna continue to have some of the highest petrol prices, while Delhi and Lucknow remain relatively cheaper markets, mainly due to differences in state-level taxes. In the national capital, petrol was priced at Rs 94.77 per litre, while diesel stood at Rs 87.67 per litre, according to the latest price notification issued by state-run oil marketing companies.

Global oil markets have turned highly volatile as tensions have escalated in the Middle East involving Iran, Israel and the United States, triggering fears of a major disruption in global energy supply. The crisis has intensified concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial energy chokepoint that handles nearly 20% of the world’s oil shipments, making it one of the most strategic routes for global crude transport.

Amid the escalating geopolitical uncertainty, Brent crude prices briefly surged past $119 per barrel earlier this week before easing slightly following indications of possible de-escalation in the region. The sharp spike in oil prices has sparked concerns about a global energy shock, which could push fuel prices higher and fuel inflation across several major economies.

However, despite the turbulence in international energy markets, Indian authorities have indicated that retail fuel prices are likely to remain stable in the near term, offering temporary relief to consumers. The move is also aimed at keeping inflation under control and protecting domestic markets from global oil price volatility.

Will petrol and diesel price increase?

The government has reiterated its stand of no increase in retail prices of diesel and petrol to shield the common man. Petrol and diesel prices in India are unlikely to increase despite tensions in the Middle East, government sources said on Monday, adding that the country has sufficient fuel reserves and supply arrangements in place. According to government sources cited by news agency ANI, the current crude oil situation is not expected to immediately affect domestic fuel prices.
