Petrol Diesel price today
The prices of petrol and diesel in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and other Indian cities remain unchanged on May 11, Monday. However, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for careful use of fuel, speculations are rife that prices may go up further anytime now. PM Modi urged people to use petrol, diesel and gas “with great restraint” and suggested measures such as using public transport, carpooling and reviving work-from-home practices to reduce fuel consumption amid the ongoing West Asia conflict.

The global crude prices breached the $104-per-barrel mark after US President Donald Trump's response to Iran's latest proposal and this has led to chatter that fuel prices in India might see a hike soon.

PM Modi work from home advisory

Addressing a gathering in Secunderabad, PM Modi said work-from-home systems, online meetings and video conferences should once again be encouraged “in the national interest”. “We must prioritise work from home, online conferences, and virtual meetings again,” he said.

“In this time of global crisis, we have to make a resolution keeping duty paramount and fulfil it with complete dedication,” he said. “A big resolution is to use petrol and diesel sparingly. We must curb our use of petrol and diesel.”

“The growing culture of weddings abroad, travelling abroad, and vacationing abroad is becoming prevalent among the middle class. We must decide that during this time of crisis, we should postpone travelling abroad for at least a year,” he said.

Petrol diesel price hike before May 15

According to sources, the hike in fuel prices remains inevitable now as state-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) have incurred losses of more than Rs 1 lakh crore over the past 10 weeks as they continued to shield Indian consumers from soaring global fuel prices triggered by the ongoing Middle East conflict.

The three state-run fuel retailers, Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, are currently suffering combined under-recoveries of around Rs 1,600 crore to Rs 1,700 crore per day, sources cited by news agency PTI said.

“There is no doubt that a fuel price hike has become inevitable, but the timing and quantum of increase have to be decided by the government,” a source told PTI.

The Centre has already reduced excise duties to absorb part of the burden. Excise duty on petrol was cut to Rs 3 per litre from Rs 13, while diesel excise duty was reduced to zero from Rs 10 per litre, resulting in a monthly revenue hit of around Rs 14,000 crore for the government.
