Petrol and diesel prices across India remained unchanged on April 5, 2026, even as global crude oil markets continue to witness sharp volatility driven by geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

Oil marketing companies (OMCs) maintained retail fuel prices under the daily revision mechanism, which updates rates at 6 am based on international crude oil movements and currency exchange fluctuations.

Global crude oil volatility driven by West Asia tensions

International oil markets have seen heightened instability due to ongoing geopolitical tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States. The conflict has raised concerns over potential disruptions in supply routes, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly 20% of global oil shipments pass.

Brent crude oil prices hovered around $109 per barrel amid continued uncertainty in the region.

Government signals near-term stability in retail fuel prices

Despite global fluctuations, Indian authorities have indicated that retail fuel prices are expected to remain stable in the near term. Oil marketing companies are reportedly absorbing part of the volatility to prevent sudden price shocks for consumers and to help control inflationary pressures.

While fuel prices are linked to global crude oil trends, they are also influenced by domestic taxes, currency exchange rates and regulatory decisions.

Premium petrol and diesel prices revised as select fuel variants see sharp hikes amid oil cost pressure

Premium petrol and diesel prices in India have seen revisions, with select high-octane and branded fuel variants becoming more expensive amid rising global crude oil pressures and margin adjustments by private retailers.

The changes come as standard petrol and diesel prices across the country remain stable, even as premium and specialty fuels witness upward revisions.

On April 1, IndianOil revised the price of XP100 petrol, India’s first 100-octane premium fuel, by ₹11 per litre. The fuel now costs ₹160 per litre, up from ₹149 earlier.

XP100 is primarily used in luxury cars and high-performance motorcycles, where higher octane levels are designed to improve engine efficiency and output.

The company also revised its premium diesel variant, Xtra Green, which now retails at ₹92.99 per litre, compared to ₹91.49 earlier.

Private fuel retailers including Shell India and Nayara Energy have also increased fuel prices, citing pressure from elevated global crude oil rates.

Prices may vary across cities due to differences in local taxes and levies.
