The shirt worn by Brazilian football legend Pele during the 1958 FIFA World Cup final has been sold for USD 4.9 million at a Sotheby's auction, making it the most valuable piece of memorabilia associated with the three-time World Cup winner. The iconic No. 10 jersey was worn by Pele when he scored twice in Brazil's 5-2 victory over Sweden, securing the country's first FIFA World Cup title.
According to Reuters, citing Sotheby's, the shirt attracted 10 bids from more than five bidders during the auction.
Second-most expensive football shirt ever sold
The sale made Pele's jersey the second-most expensive football shirt ever auctioned. It trails only Diego Maradona's Argentina shirt from the 1986 FIFA World Cup quarter-final against England, which sold for USD 9.3 million in 2022 after the match in which Maradona scored the famous "Hand of God" goal.
Sotheby's also noted that the same Pele shirt had previously been auctioned in 2004 for GBP 70,505.

Pele starred in Brazil's first World Cup triumph
Pele was just 17 years old when he played in the 1958 FIFA World Cup final in Stockholm. He scored two goals as Brazil defeated hosts Sweden 5-2 to lift their maiden World Cup trophy.

The Brazilian legend remains the youngest player ever to score in a FIFA World Cup final. He finished the 1958 tournament with six goals.
Three-time World Cup winner
Pele went on to win three FIFA World Cup titles with Brazil in 1958, 1962 and 1970, the most by any individual player.
Although he scored only once during the 1962 tournament, Brazil successfully defended its title with a 3-1 victory over Czechoslovakia in the final.
In the 1970 FIFA World Cup final, Pele opened the scoring in Brazil's 4-1 win over Italy and finished the tournament with four goals.

Football icon died in 2022
Pele passed away in 2022 at the age of 82 following a battle with cancer. His achievements on the field continue to be celebrated, with memorabilia from his historic career remaining among the most sought-after items in world football.
