Pankaj Dheer: How 'moustache stupidity' cost him Arjun's role but destiny made him Mahabharat's Karna
Pankaj Dheer death: Veteran actor Pankaj Dheer, renowned for his portrayal of Karna in B.R. Chopra's Mahabharat, passed away at 68. He initially lost the role of Arjuna due to refusing to shave his moustache, a decision he later regretted. Chopr...

Dheer’s career extended far beyond the epic of Kurukshetra. After Mahabharat, he became a familiar face on Indian television with shows like Chandrakanta, The Great Maratha, Yug, and Badho Bahu. In Bollywood, he made his presence felt in films such as Sadak, Soldier, and Baadshah — often in supporting yet memorable roles. But it was his powerful portrayal of Karna that etched his name permanently in the hearts of Indian audiences.
Interestingly, Dheer was not originally meant to play Karna — he was initially cast as Arjuna. In one of his old interviews, Dheer had revealed how he lost the role due to what he himself called “my big stupidity.”
When Pankaj Dheer refused to shave
He recalled that the writers of Mahabharat — Rahi Masoom Raza, Bhring Tupkari, and Pandit Narendra Sharma — were impressed by his audition for Arjuna and had even signed a contract with him. Everything was finalised until B.R. Chopra summoned him to discuss a crucial detail: for the Arjuna role, Dheer would need to shave his moustache to play Brihannala, Arjuna’s eunuch disguise during exile.Dheer refused, explaining that his facial features wouldn’t suit a clean-shaven look. His refusal didn’t sit well with Chopra, who questioned his dedication.
“Are you really an actor? You’re rejecting such a big role because of a moustache?” Chopra reportedly said.
Dheer stood by his decision, but later admitted it was a huge mistake. Chopra immediately cancelled his contract and asked him to leave the office, saying, “Get out and don’t come back.” For the next six months, Dheer remained out of work, taking on small dubbing assignments to get by.
Born to became Karna
However, it seem Pankaj Dheer was born to play the role of Karna. The actor revealed that Chopra contacted him again — this time offering him the role of Karna. Before accepting, Dheer made sure to ask one thing:Chopra laughed and confirmed he didn’t. That marked the beginning of Dheer’s most iconic journey — as Karna, the tragic hero of Mahabharat.
The series went on to become one of Indian television’s most celebrated epics, alongside Ramayan (1987). Dheer’s performance as Karna received immense love and recognition; his image even appeared in textbooks as the visual embodiment of the mythological warrior.
Looking back, Dheer often called it destiny — losing Arjuna but gaining Karna, the role that made him immortal.
