Pakistan's Lahore ranked as the world's most polluted city on Friday, with its Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 410, a level classified as hazardous, according to Swiss air quality monitoring platform IQAir. The platform also reported that the city's PM2.5 concentration was 45.2 times higher than the World Health Organisation's annual guideline value.

An AQI reading reflects the level of air pollution and the associated health risks, with higher values indicating more polluted air. Under IQAir's classification, readings above 300 fall into the hazardous category, raising concerns about the potential effects of exposure on public health.

PM2.5 pollution raises health concerns

PM2.5 consists of fine inhalable particles measuring 2.5 micrometres or less in diameter. Because of their small size, these particles can travel deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, potentially leading to serious health complications, particularly with prolonged exposure.

Lahore and other areas of Pakistan's Punjab province experience recurring smog each year, typically between October and February, according to the provincial government. The worsening pollution has become a significant environmental and public health concern in the region in recent years.

Health experts and air quality authorities have repeatedly advised residents to take precautions when pollution levels become severe.

IQAir issues precautions during severe smog

IQAir recommends limiting outdoor physical activity, keeping windows shut to reduce the entry of polluted air, wearing protective masks when outdoors and using air purifiers indoors.

Lahore's recurring episodes of hazardous smog have renewed concerns about the need for stronger pollution-control measures, better air quality monitoring and steps to reduce health risks for residents.
